Amazing Race 13 : dunderheads in Brazil

THE AMAZING RACE 13 Oy vey! There were a lot of dunderheaded mistakes made by the teams last night on the second episode of  CBS’ “The Amazing Race” — like when the 11 teams attempted the the Detour — Beach It (in which the teams had to roll a 440-pound boat some 100 yards from the beach to the ocean  using some heavy logs) or Dock It (which had teams use a computer to find a container at a massive shipyard).

The “newly dating” couple — the whining emotional baby Terence and more levelheaded Sarah — finished the challenge on the beach in first place but failed to follow the signs that would have led them to the taxi and a ride to the next pit stop.  So they ended up walking into a small town, where there didn’t seem to be a taxi in sight.  And then there were the Texas divorcees, Kelly & Christy, who got confused when they didn’t read the instructions properly after they finished the Beach It task. They thought they had to look for the container, which — doh! — was only for the folks who did the Dock It task, and ended up digging in the sand looking for a container. Finally, they realized that they bungled the instructions, but they also ran into problems at the Roadblock. Everyone was instructed to tell their taxicab drivers to stay while they did the task, but the girls forgot and let their driver go.  By a real miracle, though, they managed to find the taxi and weren’t eliminated.

The annoying estranged married couple, Ken & Tina, continued to be as fun to watch as chalk on a blackboard.  Especially when they were at the Salvador, Brazil airport.  When Ken & Tina and brother/sister Nick & Starr got to the airport first, they learned that an early flight to their next destination had only one seat left.  Then they got news that the airline had switched to a bigger plane. Tina got it into her swelled, obnoxious head that she was the one who had influenced the airline to get a bigger plane and she insisted on telling everyone about it.  But her fellow contestants weren’t gullible and didn’t buy into this hogwash.

Of course, there are some teams you wouldn’t mind having dinner with, especially the mother/son Toni & Dallas.  After watching family teams squabble during past installments of the series,  these two seem remarkably well-adjusted. And their kindness came through when they stopped their taxi on the way to the Detour to let the clueless Terence & Sarah know where to get their taxi.

Unfortunately, team Ken & Tina seem to be with us for a while because they won last night’s leg — and an off-road bike to boot — with the computer geeks Mark & Bill coming in a surprisingly strong second.

The Los Angeles-based couple, Anthony & Stephanie, who ran into major problems with taxis, were eliminated last night.  The couple had hoped to become engaged at the conclusion of the race.  Stephanie reports, though, that their relationship is “fantastic. I definitely think marriage will be in the future for us. ”

“We just wanted to have an exotic experience together,” said Anthony, who is a mortgage broker. “I think it helped enormously.  We got to experience something that not many people get to experience. We saw a good side in each other.”

The athletic couple added that they weren’t presented with many challenges in which they could surpass other teams. “There wasn’t the opportunity to pass somebody quicker, like a physical challenge for us,” Anthony said.  ”So I think the main downfall was that we didn’t move fast enough in between the challenges, like with the cabs…. If we would have taken some different turns….

“It was so much harder than it looked like than on TV,” said Stephanie, a financial saleswoman. ”There is so much tension and anxiety. But it’s a blast at the same time. We really wanted to go all the way with our hearts and soul. ”
