Well, once more, David Cook has beaten David Archuleta. One week after David Archuleta, the American Idol runner-up, clocked in at number 2 on the Billboard charts with his self-titled debut album, David Cook can take solace in another victory. While Cook placed lower on the charts (his self-titled album debuted at number 3), he ended up selling 279,000 copies of his album, compared to Archuleta’s 183,000 copies sold in his first week on the charts. Even more, Archuleta’s album plummeted in its second week of sales, dropping from number 2 on the charts all the way out of the top ten, to number 11.
Cook’s numbers are even more impressive when you consider the increased competition he faced in his first week on the charts. Beyonce topped the list in her first week with “I am…Sasha Fierce.” That was closely followed by the new Nickelback album “Dark Horse.” The question for David Cook, now, is will he have more staying power than his fellow American Idol David Archuleta? It’s hard to know, but I suspect he will. Archuleta’s fans are incredibly rabid, and his drop-off from week 1 to week 2 doesn’t surprise me.
Still, David Archuleta did pretty well in his first week on the charts. We shouldn’t take that away from him. The American Idol runner-up, David Archuleta’s self-titled debut album landed at number 2 on the Billboard 200 list in its first week of being released. It is the third best ever debut for an American Idol runner-up. Archuleta sold 183,000 copies which dwarfs last year’s American Idol runner-up, Blake Lewis, who sold only 98,000 copies of his first album, “Audio Daydream.” The only two runners-up to outsell Archuleta in their debuts are Bo Bice, who moved 227,000 copies of “The Real Thing” and Clay Aiken, whose mark of 613,000 copies sold may never be beaten by another American Idol second place finisher.
